Curriculum Intent
At Hambrough Primary School, our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum aims to ensure that learning another language enables pupils to interpret, create and exchange meaning within and across cultures. We recognise that developing competence in a foreign language supports pupils in becoming confident communicators and opens up opportunities later in life.
Through the teaching of Spanish, we aim to increase pupils’ cultural awareness, helping them to learn about the language, people and customs of different countries. We strive to spark curiosity and foster a positive attitude towards language learning, encouraging pupils to enjoy communicating in another language and to develop an appreciation of linguistic and cultural diversity.
Curriculum Implementation
Spanish is taught from Key Stage 1 onwards through a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops key disciplinary language skills, including:
- Listening
- Speaking
- Reading
- Writing
- Grammar
Learning is supported through core areas of knowledge such as vocabulary, phrases, pronunciation and intonation, alongside an understanding of culture and customs. Pupils are given regular opportunities to practise language skills, communicate meaningfully and build confidence in both spoken and written Spanish.
Curriculum Impact
As pupils progress through the school, they develop the confidence and skills to understand and communicate in Spanish, using an increasing range of vocabulary and grammatical structures.
Pupils leave Hambrough Primary School with a positive attitude towards languages, an appreciation of other cultures and a strong foundation for further language learning at the next stage of their education.
