Supporting Learning at Home
The importance of parents support
- Children spend 70% of their waking hours outside school
- Teachers + parents = lots more learning
- Children whose parents are positively engaged in supporting learning at home do better
- The difference has been shown to be as much as 25% - the same as 3 month extra progress over a year
- The earlier parental involvement begins – the more powerful it is
- You are REALLY important!
The power of talking!
There are many ways you can support your child’s learning but the simply talking with your child has the biggest impact on how well they do at school:
- Praise your child for hard work at school. Take time to read and talk about the work they bring home
- Ask what your child is learning in school. What does your child think is most interesting? What seems hard?
- Ask questions to learn more about your child’s thinking: How do you know? What do you notice? Why did you do it this way?
How else can you help?
You don’t have to be your child teacher - all children get the same teaching at school – what you do at home adds the extra bit:
- Let your child know that education matters – that’s the foundation for their success
- Know what your child is expected to learn each year
- Talk to your child about what is happening in school
If you would like to find out more about what your child is learning at school and how you can help them we run lots of workshops every term. You can find a full list of workshops and read handouts from previous sessions on our Parents Workshop Page
