Curriculum Intent

At Hambrough Primary School, our Music curriculum aims to offer a diverse, engaging and educational musical experience that inspires enjoyment, creativity and understanding. We recognise that music reflects the culture and society in which we live, and through music we aim to help pupils better understand the world around them.

Our curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create, play and perform confidently, as well as to make informed judgements about the quality of music. We aim for pupils to develop musical craftsmanship by applying skills and techniques purposefully and learning to communicate and reason musically.

Through exposure to a diverse range of composers, genres and traditions, pupils develop an understanding of how music has shaped, and continues to shape, cultures and societies.

Curriculum Implementation

Music is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops key disciplinary skills, including:

• Singing
• Playing and composing
• Listening and appraising
• Communicating as a musician
• Developing musical vocabulary

Learning is supported through core areas of knowledge such as historical periods, great composers, genre, musical style, musical processes and musical traditions. Pupils are given regular opportunities to listen, perform, compose and evaluate music, building confidence and musical understanding over time.

Curriculum Impact

As pupils progress through the school, they develop the confidence, skills and musical understanding to perform, compose and evaluate music across a range of styles and traditions.

Pupils leave Hambrough Primary School as enthusiastic, reflective musicians with a strong appreciation of music and an understanding of its role in shaping culture and society, as well as a positive attitude towards continued musical learning.
