Curriculum Intent
At Hambrough Primary School, our Geography curriculum aims to inspire curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We want pupils to think as geographers, developing knowledge of diverse places, people and environments through exploration and enquiry.
From the Early Years Foundation Stage, children begin by exploring their immediate environment and developing an awareness of place. As pupils progress through the school, they gain a deep understanding of physical and human geography, learning how the Earth’s features are shaped, interconnected and change over time. Through Geography, we also foster a strong care for the environment, including an understanding of global issues such as climate change.
Curriculum Implementation
In EYFS, Geography is taught through Understanding the World, where children explore their surroundings through play, observation and discussion.
From Key Stage 1 onwards, pupils follow a carefully sequenced Geography curriculum that develops key disciplinary skills, including geographical enquiry, direction and location, map skills and fieldwork, perspective, and organisation and communication. Learning is supported through core areas of knowledge such as location, physical and human features, diversity, physical and human processes and geographical techniques, helping pupils to build secure understanding over time.
Curriculum Impact
By the end of EYFS, children are curious about the world around them and can talk about their environment.
As pupils move through the school, they develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to describe places, explain geographical processes and understand how the world is changing. Pupils leave Hambrough Primary School as informed and responsible geographers, well prepared for the next stage of their education and with a strong understanding of the world they live in.
