Curriculum Intent

At Hambrough Primary School, our PSHE curriculum aims to enable pupils to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage pupils to play a positive role within the school and the wider community, helping to develop their self‑worth, confidence and sense of responsibility.

From the Early Years Foundation Stage, children begin to develop an understanding of themselves and others. As pupils progress through the school, they learn how society is organised and governed, experience democratic processes, and develop an understanding of rights and responsibilities. Our curriculum promotes respect, tolerance and appreciation of diversity, supporting pupils to become positive members of a modern, multi-cultural society.

Curriculum Implementation

In EYFS, PSHE is taught through Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), where children learn to manage feelings, build relationships and develop confidence and independence.

From Key Stage 1 onwards, pupils follow a carefully sequenced PSHE curriculum that develops key disciplinary skills, including:

  • Developing confidence and responsibility and making the most of their abilities
  • Preparing to play an active role as citizens
  • Developing a healthy and safe lifestyle
  • Developing positive relationships and respecting differences between people

Learning is structured around the core strands of Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World, enabling pupils to apply their learning to real‑life situations.

Curriculum Impact

By the end of EYFS, children demonstrate growing confidence, independence and the ability to form positive relationships.

As pupils move through the school, they develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to make informed choices, build healthy relationships and contribute positively to society. Pupils leave Hambrough Primary School as respectful, responsible and confident individuals, well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.
